A Japanese drugstore gem ! – Daiso Charcoal peel-off mask review

Daiso Japan Natural Pack with charcoal

Most of you out there might have heard of the Japanese chain store called Daiso. They sell everything imaginable and all the items are priced at 7,14 and 21AED (it’s like a dollar store but a tad more expensive). It’s one of my favorite stores and it’s quite hard to walk out of the store without buying anything !

Daiso has quite a large selection of makeup and accessories like cotton pads, oil-blotting sheets, fake lashes etc. Most of the makeup looks quite juvenile, with sparkly, colourful packaging ! And they sell a small selection of skincare items including this Charcoal mask.

Initially when I saw this I was not very interested in it. The instructions were only in Japanese and I had no idea what it was for. As you know I’ve had acne for a long time and I am quite careful with experimenting with new stuff.

After my skin cleared up I was researching for masks that are good for oily skin and I read a lot of reviews about the charcoal mask and how great it was for absorbing excess oil from the skin. There are also quite a few reviews on YouTube with instructions on how to apply the mask. I decided to buy the smaller sized which is priced at 7AED and give it a try.

To my surprise the smaller tube (80g) I bought had instructions in English. The product is made in Korea and according to the label it contains charcoal and ‘natural ingredients from Oak trees’. With the worldwide craze for Korean made skincare/makeup at a all time high, I figure anything made in Korea has to be good 🙂

The mask after it’s applied

The mask is black with a viscous texture and with a herbal (a bit like sandalwood) scent. Following instructions I apply it to my freshly cleansed, dry face (the instructions say to apply it just to your nose but I prefer to apply it all over). I wait until the mask dries (in 10-15 minutes) and I peel it off. It is a bit of a challenge to peel it off (the thicker the mask, the easier to peel it off). Then wash off to remove any left over bits and follow up with a quick swipe of witch hazel to tone the skin. I use a light moisturiser or a serum afterwards.

This mask seems to absorb oil and magically reduce the size of my pores ! My face looks fresh, almost like I had a facial ! I use it once or twice a week depending on how oily my skin is.

This is a great, cheap mask for people with oily skin. If you have sensitive or dry skin, please test it before using it.

If there any other products you recommend from Daiso, I’d love to know so please do leave a comment.

Thanks a lot for reading !
